What is Hastelloy
Hastelloy refers to a type of nickel-based alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. This type of alloy is composed of elements such as nickel, molybdenum, and chromium. It may also contain elements such as iron, tungsten, and copper to give the alloy specific properties. Hastelloy is a series of alloys developed by Haynes International, Inc. in the United States. They are mainly used in chemical, petrochemical, marine and other harsh corrosive environments.
The characteristics of Hastelloy include:
- Corrosion resistance: It has good corrosion resistance in oxidizing, reducing and mixed corrosive media.
- Heat resistance: It can maintain its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at high temperatures.
- Strength and toughness: It has good mechanical strength and good toughness.
Common Hastelloy Alloy Grades & Chemical Compositions
Common Hastelloy grades include:
- Hastelloy B-3 (UNS N10675): has excellent corrosion resistance in reducing environments, especially in hydrochloric acid, and has better weldability and thermal stability than B-2 alloy.
- Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276): a widely used grade with excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, suitable for a variety of corrosive environments.
- Hastelloy C-22 (UNS N06022): provides better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than C-276, suitable for more demanding corrosive environments.
- Hastelloy C-4 (UNS N06455): the main feature is resistance to hot concentrated sulfuric acid corrosion, suitable for chemical and petrochemical industries.
- Hastelloy C-2000: combines the advantages of C-276 and C-22, providing excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
- Hastelloy G-30 (UNS N06030): Especially suitable for resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion, including high concentrations of hot sulfuric acid.
- Hastelloy G-35 (UNS N06035): Similar to G-30, it is also an alloy for resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion, but has a different alloy composition to suit specific applications.
- Hastelloy X (UNS N06002): It has excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance and is suitable for high-temperature applications such as gas turbines.
These grades are the more common ones in Hastelloy alloys. They play an important role in different industrial applications, especially where corrosion resistance is required.
